This book1 is written for youngsters, and it is an excellent introduction for them into what it is like to live in space aboard the shuttle. Although the writing seems a little "sing-songy" in places, it is very clear and accurate while avoiding the opposite failing of veering too far toward adult language, technical terms and "ten-dollar words". The 51 large color pictures (52 counting the jacket) convey a very complete visual impression of the experience, and the book describes all aspects of a typical mission, including the use of the infamous toilet. There is even a picture of the toilet (though not while it's in use.)

The book is indexed and provides a glossary of the technical terms (like "airlock") that are used. A split-view drawing by Mike Eagle shows the Shuttle's crew cabin. It is keyed so that the reader can easily identify the major features of the reusable spacecraft.

1 Dr. Ride has written at least four books for youngsters.
